How to Start an AliExpress Dropshipping Business: Beginner Guide

Pick one AliExpress listing, one destination and one exact variant. Save the checkout evidence, get the seller’s answers in writing, and place a test order through AliExpress. Connect the listing to your store only after the item, packing, tracking and delivery path check out.

Build one order file before you import the listing

A single listing record is more useful than a folder of “winning product” screenshots. It gives you a baseline to revisit when the seller changes a variant, price or shipping option.

Evidence fieldWhat to save before the test order
Product and listingProduct name, listing URL, seller/store name and date checked
Exact variantColour, size, plug, model, bundle and any other option selected
DestinationCountry and postal-code area used for the checkout test
Product costPrice for the exact variant and any listing-level discount shown that day
ShippingMethod, charge, seller’s handling basis and delivery estimate shown at checkout
Taxes and dutiesWhat checkout shows, plus anything still undetermined
ReturnsFree Return label, if shown for that item, and the order-page route that applies
Product evidenceDimensions, materials, included parts, warnings and photos for the selected variant
Seller responseWritten confirmation of stock, variant, packing and no-invoice/no-promotion request
Test resultOrder date, shipment events, delivery, product match, packing, damage and communication

Leave unknowns blank until the seller, listing or order page answers them.

The test follows the same handoffs as a customer order: the store variant maps to the supplier variant; you place and pay for the supplier order; the seller dispatches; tracking reaches your store; and you watch the parcel through delivery. If something goes wrong, your customer deals with your store while you deal with the AliExpress seller and order page.

Shopify’s 2026 AliExpress guide recommends a test order before committing to a supplier because it exposes the delivery and product experience.[1]

This guide starts after product choice

Niche selection, store setup and marketing belong in the broader how to start dropshipping from China guide and beginner product-sourcing guide. Here, the product has already reached the listing-check stage.

A factory location still tells you nothing about today’s stock, variant mapping or delivery option. Use the China industrial clusters guide for geographic background, not as a seller shortcut. Readers still comparing business models should use the separate China dropshipping vs AliExpress vs Alibaba guide.

Replace the old tool setup

The Oberlo screenshot below is retained from the previous article, but its instructions are not part of this setup. Shopify’s 2026 guide uses DSers as its AliExpress automation example.[1]

DSers calls the store-to-supplier connection “mapping”: when a customer buys one store variant, the rule points the order to one supplier and one supplier variant.[6] Check every mapped colour, size, plug and bundle against the test-order file. A seller who replaces the listing or rearranges variants can break a mapping that worked yesterday.

Check the listing and seller

Seller ratings help with screening, but the product-specific evidence matters more than a magic score. Look for:

  • recent reviews for the selected variant, or the closest variant clearly identified;
  • buyer photos you can compare with the description;
  • repeated comments about the same defect, packing issue or variation mismatch;
  • consistent dimensions, materials and included parts across the title, options, specifications and images;
  • a shipping option available to the intended destination at checkout;
  • a specific seller reply to your specific question.

Ask the seller to omit invoices, promotions and supplier-branded inserts. Shopify includes that request in its AliExpress ordering guidance.[1] Save the reply with the date; an old store score cannot confirm today’s stock or packing.

Read returns from the listing and order page

The old warranty screenshot below is not a policy reference. AliExpress’s Buyer Protection page identifies non-arrival, damage and an item that does not match its description as covered situations within the applicable protection period. It sends the buyer to the order’s Return/refund flow.[2]

Free Return has a narrower scope. The terms apply to participating products carrying the Free Return label, and the process starts by opening a dispute from the order page.[3] AliExpress also says that service features can vary by country or region.[4]

Save the label and policy route for the exact test order. A return option from another item or market does not belong in your store promise. The separate AliExpress legitimacy and buying-safely guide covers the wider buyer-safety question.

Send the seller one clear message

Keep the reply in the AliExpress message thread. Replace the brackets before sending:

Hello. I am testing this item for customer orders to [destination]. Please confirm the exact variant [variant], stock, expected handling, package contents, and whether you can ship without an invoice, promotion or supplier-branded insert. Please also confirm the tracking method and how you will notify me if the item, variant or shipping option becomes unavailable. I will place a test order before listing it in my store.

A reply that only says “yes” leaves the variant, packing and shipping rows open. Ask again, or test another seller. Treat a proposed substitute as a new option with its own evidence and test.

Run the test order

Order the approved variant through the delivery route you plan to serve, or the closest route the test can reproduce. Shopify says the delivery estimate should come from the supplier, destination and shipping method shown on the listing.[1]

Decide: pass, hold or reject

The decision covers the tested listing, seller, variant and destination. A later change reopens the affected rows.

PassEvidence complete; test order matchedMap the approved variants and launch carefully
HoldEvidence missing or a fixable test problem remainsFix the row and retest that step
RejectWrong variant, undocumented substitute, unusable tracking, unresolved safety/compliance issue, or seller refusal to correctKeep the listing out of the store

An important unresolved problem outweighs a long list of minor passes.

Know when the marketplace workflow is running out of room

AliExpress can handle a small listing-to-order test. More control may be needed when:

  • supplier or listing changes keep breaking mappings;
  • several suppliers need one packing and dispatch standard;
  • recurring defects need inspection before international shipment;
  • branded packing or SKU-specific compliance records must match the order.

Illustration of the point where a seller may need controlled China fulfillment

This guide stops at those triggers. The China dropshipping agent selection guide and Shopify dropshipping from China guide cover the next decision. Sellers who already need execution can compare the China dropshipping agent service and Shopify fulfillment from China service.

Set the delivery promise from checkout evidence

Skip universal shipping categories, weight rules and delivery ranges. Keep four things with the product record:

  • exact listing, variant and destination;
  • shipping method and estimate shown at checkout, with the date;
  • seller’s handling basis and the test-order events;
  • the last date price, stock and shipping were rechecked.

AliExpress shipping options checked for one destination before setting a delivery promise

Choice is one AliExpress program, not a label for every order. Alibaba Group describes a hybrid model with more platform involvement and says some shipping, return and delivery benefits apply in selected countries.[5] Check the exact listing and market before using any of those benefits in customer-facing copy.

For US orders, the FTC says an online seller needs a reasonable basis for its advertised shipping time. If the seller cannot ship within that time, the rule requires consent to the delay or a refund for the unshipped merchandise.[9] Publish the estimate you can support and monitor.

Marketing is a separate job. Ads and social posts come after the listing, mapping and delivery promise work; the broader startup guide owns that plan.

Place, pay, sync and monitor

DSers’s order guide first creates an unpaid AliExpress order, then sends the user to AliExpress to pay.[7] Mapping decides which supplier variant the order uses.[6]

Keep a small exception log even when the routine handoffs are automated:

Store orderMapped listing/variantSupplier orderPaidTrackingExceptionOwner/next check

After the seller marks an order shipped, DSers can sync the tracking number back to Shopify.[8] The store operator still needs to watch for no movement, return to sender, failed delivery, customs hold, a wrong destination or a number with no usable carrier event. DSers notes that forcing a tracking sync does not make the supplier ship faster.[7]

Your customer policy and AliExpress protection are different files

The customer bought from your store; you placed a separate AliExpress order. Write the store’s shipping, cancellation, refund and return terms for the market where you sell. Then document how you will contact the seller, reorder, refund your customer or open an AliExpress dispute when the supplier order has a covered issue.

Keep the store order, supplier order, listing snapshot, customer evidence, tracking and seller messages together. That file supports whatever action comes next. Free Return still depends on the labelled product and order conditions, so it should never be copied wholesale into the store policy.[2][3]

Two destination checks worth adding

United States

Tie the shipping statement on the product page or store policy to evidence that supports the advertised time. Keep a delay/refund route for merchandise that has not shipped.[9]

European Union

The European Commission’s GPSR summary says consumer products sold online are covered and identifies a responsible economic operator in the EU for products within scope.[10]

These two notes are not complete compliance checklists. Product, destination, channel and business role determine the rest; use a qualified adviser or laboratory when specialist review is required.

Recheck before each launch

A passed test order lets you start cautiously. Reopen the record when the seller, listing URL, variant structure, specification, stock, price, shipping option, return label or destination changes.

For a China-side review of the packing, inspection or fulfillment handoff, send the listing, destination, test-order record and unresolved rows through the contact page.
